HSC Study Day: King Lear

The Shakespeare Globe Centre Australia runs HSC study days every year. These days are designed to enrich students' understanding of HSC texts beyond what may be achieved in the classroom alone.

Speakers include notable tertiary academics and theatrical professionals whose experience provides a greater, multi-faceted insight into the texts. Speakers analyse the text in depth, and explore it from a variety of readings relevant to the outcomes of the syllabus.

The Study Day includes a performance of Playing Lear, which also contributes a great deal to the HSC study unit of King Lear.

Morning lectures, led by selected members of our academic team, such as:

  • Dr. John Hughes, Pro Dean, Faculty of Education and Social Work, University of Sydney
  • Dr. Will Christie, Lecturer, Department of English, University of Sydney
  • David Ritchie, actor, director and former Senior Lecturer in Departments of English & Cultural Studies, Macquarie University

Topics covered will include:

  • Action, language and images in playing King Lear
  • Plot, characters, setting, actors, focus, music, sound and pace in production of the play
  • History of the text and performance and the exaltation of King Lear

Afternoon sessions will include:

  • Matthew O'Sullivan's acclaimed Playing Lear
  • Discussion led by Diana Denley, Artistic Director Shakespeare Globe Centre Australia
